Online Dating Must Change
The founder of both Tinder and Bumble had critical things to say about the online dating industry in a recent New York Times interview. *Whitney Wolfe Herd pointed to pressures that distract the dating app industry from what should be their mission: providing users with what they want and need.
“Are our members actually getting what they came here for?” she asked. “That question stopped being asked for too long. We were chasing growth. When you chase growth, you get it, but then you lose it.”
Well, brava Ms. Herd! — for recognizing the trap in the strategy that Silibandia (Silicon Valley plus the broadband and media industries plus their feeders) has sold to just about every app and web based business. The dating business isn’t the only online industry turning a blind eye to fake identities, but its “growth” benefits greatly from the practice.
“Growth” is a code word for Silibandia’s practice of exploiting, rather than serving, the people (let’s stop calling them “users”) it depends upon. If they can generate page views and clicks and extended session time — wasting your time, not to mention your hopes of a meaningful relationship, trying to connect with a ghost or a fraudster — well, that’s just what it takes to show “growth” in quarterly numbers to be consumed by the wolves of Wall Street. It becomes impossible to get off that “growth” treadmill.
If all they were selling were fads and fashions, perhaps the practice would be less objectionable. But online dating is about peoples’ hopes for finding that special someone to share their lives with. Dating is the entry point to one of the most important parts of life: steady, meaningful companionship.
And that’s what they’re playing with and “monetizing”: the peace of mind, the hopes and dreams of the people who have given them their trust.
How dare they!
Help us fix this.
In 1981 I launched the world’s first online encyclopedia, which soon became the Delphi social network. Before we sold the business to Rupert Murdoch’s News America Corp. a decade later, hundreds of thousands of couples had met on Delphi. Many of them later married.
Delphi didn’t provide a dating service. Indeed, in those days social media was text-only, so there was no way to share pictures. Rather, people simply met in the various online clubs and gatherings and formed relationships based on the interests and values they shared. It would have been considered uncool if you led by talking about your height, attractiveness — your “features” as a product.
It occurred to me at the time, and I still believe, that the reason we spawned so many successful relationships and marriages was that when people connect with values, ideas, humor, and conversation rather than by promoting their “features,” the resulting relationship is simply better in all respects.
